5 effective ways to get promoted faster

Have you ever wondered why, despite your long work experience, you didn't receive a raise or couldn't be promoted to a more responsible position, even though your co-workers could count on such a nod from the employer many times? Very often it happens that the salaries of people working in parallel positions differ diametrically from each other. Equally often, people working in a given position are never promoted or given more responsible tasks by their superiors. Why is it that some get promoted while others lag behind watching others fare better? This is dictated by many factors that are worth being aware of.

First: be PROactive

This is a relatively simple slogan in its very premise, but many do not take it seriously at all. Regardless of whether you are a programmer of new technologies, a salesman or a person working in production, you should show above-average proactivity so that your supervisor has no doubts about who belongs to the elite of his employees. If you see that your tasks are over - ask for more. Always do more than your colleagues, ask for increasingly difficult tasks and never waste time. If you feel that you have "not enough on your plate", ask your employer for new tasks. If you perform them as effectively as the first ones, there is a good chance that your employer will notice how you work. People who just wait for a cigarette break end up being unsuccessful and rarely getting promoted.

Second: be PROfessional

However, it is not an art to surround yourself with a multitude of tasks and stop doing them. This behavior may be counterproductive. If you spend your time doing a specific activity at work, do it with the greatest care you can afford. Attention to detail and professionalism in your performance will be perceived by the boss as something like taking care of his business. If you're a programmer, do your job carefully so that another programmer who steps into your code one day thinks, "Someone left a nice impression here." If you sell a product or service, put your heart into it, pay attention to details, try to be the best. However, do not count on immediate gratification, the day of glory will come at the right moment.

Third: don't force yourself to do anything

For many, this will be the most difficult way because it takes courage, but it is extremely important. Ask yourself: who does the job well? Think back to the last, best game you ever watched. Your favorite players played there. Most of them "kicked the ball" from an early age, thanks to which they reached perfection. They wouldn't have done it if they didn't like acting, they had to love what they do and treat it as a true passion. Not everyone has the predisposition to be a footballer, but many have the stubbornness and passion that matters much more. That's how you should treat your job. Love what you do, and if you don't love it, at least enjoy it. It doesn't matter what your current job is, whether you're a company director or a store cashier, ask yourself what you like to do and look for a related job. Don't force yourself to work that doesn't give you satisfaction because you'll never get promoted. In a situation where you can afford less earnings, give up a job that brings you more income and is more tiring in favor of the one where you earn less, but which suits your tastes. If you do a job in which you feel good, you have a much better chance of getting promoted.

Fourth: keep evolving

Never stop growing in your profession. Constantly try to complete more difficult tasks that will allow you to gain more experience. If possible, educate yourself on your own, even if the employer initially does not pay you extra for it. Be better than you were when you signed your contract. This will give you a bargaining chip in conversations with the employer and will allow you to adequately justify your desire for promotion. In the era of universal access to information, you can get a large part of specialist knowledge for free from the Internet, listening to podcasts, audiobooks, and reading relevant books. Today, knowledge is at your fingertips, the question is whether you want to take it out and get it.

Fifth: do things that are difficult and sometimes uncomfortable

If you care about a quick and effective promotion, after which both your salary and respect in the eyes of the employer will increase, try to do things that others do not want to do due to their complexity. If you can't do something, find out how to learn it, find someone who can help you. Try to put yourself in the shoes of your boss for a moment and think about what kind of employee you need, what tasks the organization is facing and how you can accomplish them. Create an image of the ideal employee and then follow in their footsteps. Do responsible, more and more difficult and sometimes uncomfortable jobs, i.e. those that most people do not want to look at because they require more focus or attention. Remember that success is where others cannot see.

Summary: on the way to a promotion, a higher salary or gaining recognition in the eyes of the superior, many factors are important, often depending on a specific position and everyone should consider them individually. There is no golden mean, but there is a certain common element, i.e. accuracy, conscientiousness, professionalism, constant striving for perfection as well as proactivity and commitment. It is also important to perform difficult, demanding tasks that will make the employer perceive us as a trustworthy person who can be provided with a higher position and remuneration in exchange for more demanding duties.
